Joel Sato
Joel Sato brings three decades of expertise in emergency services and fire science, exemplifying unwavering commitment to public safety and community preparedness. As Battalion Chief for the San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD), Joel leads critical emergency response strategies, oversees fire suppression, and manages hazardous materials mitigation, leveraging his certifications as a Hazardous Materials Specialist and Fire Officer. His role reflects his dedication to protecting lives and property while fostering resilience within the community.
Throughout his career, Joel has advanced through key leadership roles, including Assistant Deputy Chief of the Division of Training and Captain of multiple operational divisions. In these roles, he has developed and implemented training programs, supervised recruit and officer academies, and ensured compliance with safety regulations. His contributions have strengthened the capabilities of SFFD teams, preparing them to excel in high-stakes scenarios and advancing the department’s operational excellence.
In addition to his leadership in the fire service, for more than 15 years Joel has been an instructor at City College of San Francisco, where he educates the next generation of fire science professionals. His passion for mentorship and knowledge-sharing underscores his belief in empowering others through education.
Joel’s dedication to equity and diversity is evident in his involvement with the Asian Firefighters Association of San Francisco, where he served as President and Director, advocating for equal opportunities within the fire service. He also contributed nationally as an elected member of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Human Relations Committee, promoting inclusive practices and addressing human relations issues across the profession.
