Ocean Avenue celebrates Lunar New Year with community and culture
San Francisco’s Ocean Avenue came alive in celebration for the Lunar New Year, marking the Year of the Dragon with a vibrant display of culture and community spirit.
The festivities began with LionDanceMe’s lion dance performance, a traditional symbol of good luck and prosperity. As the lions moved along the Ocean Avenue corridor, local merchants handed red envelopes to the lions for blessing their businesses for the new year.
Additional local performers showcased traditional dance, music, and arts. The many participating artists included Chinese Folk Dance Association, Fang Yi Zither Art Center, SF Community Dance Group, SF Yayuan Art Troupe, and Tradición Peruana Cultural Center.
In a generous show of community spirit, Ocean Avenue restaurants provided more than 400 meals to attendees. Local community-based organizations were also on hand, providing valuable information on available resources, emphasizing the event’s role in fostering community support and engagement. The day also catered to the younger generation with arts & crafts and carnival games, ensuring that the celebration was a family-friendly affair.
