Bayview Celebrates Black History Month and Lunar New Year
As Black History Month began, and joyous Lunar New Year celebrations started across the city, the API and African-American communities of Bayview/Hunter’s Point came together this past weekend for an annual event to celebrate their unique cultures and common hardships, needs, and hopes.
This year’s event took place, sadly, with both communities still reeling from the tragic shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay and the death of Tyre Nichols in Memphis. With our local community partners, CYC spoke out about the need for more cross-cultural understanding and solidarity (see: CBS Bay Area News, KPIX, NBC Bay Area.)
Although these new tragedies weighed heavily on our minds, the annual Bayview celebration itself was well-timed and perfectly suited to lift spirits, build bridges, and honor the beauty of all the cultures who call Bayview home.
The day featured a blend of food, music, and art… and the joy of gathering together in-person after two years of virtual celebrations due to the ongoing pandemic. Together, we affirmed our commitment to Bayview and to each other.
